Book Review: Paladin’s Hope by T. Kingfisher

Standalone Romantasy

Book 3 in the Saint of Steel

Book 3 in the Saint of Steel series, this was a reread for me and out of all four books this comes a very, very close second in my favorites. While they are stand alone stories, I do recommend reading in order just to understand the world better and how these people are linked together. I always love spotting familiar faces in the stories and when I reread it’s fun to see the paladin’s before their devoted story.

We follow our next paladin of the fallen saint, Gaelan, who, like his brothers and sisters in arms is still broken by the death of their god. During book 2 we get to know him better and the night terrors that haunt him. Piper, a lich doctor, is our second POV character who has the sometimes handy ability to relive the dead’s final moments.

Along with Earstripe who is a gnole (if you have not read anything in this world you are missing out. But gnoles are wonderful non human characters. I’m not sure what they actually look like or how they are described but to me I see them as bipedal badgers. They are the most wonderful race and are always hilarious in their resignation about humans)

The three set off in an attempt to solve the mystery of why mutilated bodies keep washing up in their city. Which unfortunately gets them trapped in a death trap maze. Like all in this series it is a romantasy but with a great 50/50 balance of plot and romance. How do you have a romance subplot within a death maze? Quite easily it seems, with a gnole shouting suggestions too.

In classing Kingfisher style, the story is gripping and keeps you guessing. Large doses of her unique humor (my favorite quote from her books is in this one “with cheekbones you could cut cheese on), and as always a heart pounding and twisting romance that runs far deeper than just lust.

If you are going to start in this series I do recommend reading in order but if you only pick up one it would Paladin’s Grace. As this is the only one not free on Audible this book would be my next pick.

POV? Duel third person past

Will it make you cry? Pretty close to it. As always her book had strong heart to it and makes you truly care and love all the characters.

Romance? Obviously

Spicy? YES. There are on the page moments but not super graphic or drawn out.

Humor? BIG YES. All of Kingfisher’s fantasy books have a large amount of humor and will typically have me laughing or at least snorting only a few pages in.

YA/NA? Adult - one thing I love about this series is that all of the characters are mid thirties and actually act like it, bemoaning their bad backs or aching knees. Though they can make poor choices, there is a maturity to all the characters which makes them far more relatable.

Fight Scenes? We do get a couple of these, but most is about trying to not getting sliced up in said death maze

Soft/Hard magic? Hard - though magic is really not that common, there are rules about them.
